What is the FFH x world cup collection?

This art piece contains 54 Women’s World Cup symbols from around the world. From the gold chain which was based upon the logo/symbol of the first WWC held in China in 1991 to the “Il Campeonato Mundial” poster which is where an unofficial WWC was held in Mexico in 1971 to Christne Sinclair's Autobiography and “Bend it like Beckham!”

Each of the 32 countries in the 2023 WWC is represented by an individual symbol (or two) in the piece! Some special symbols: Miraildes Maciel Mota aka “Formiga” from Brazil as a bobble head in her Brazil uniform - The Four Four Two Magazine with the 9 teams who made the WWC for the first time - Eudy Simelane (In the picture frame).  Eudy was a footballer for the South African National team “Banyana Banyana” and one of the first openly gay women in South Africa.  An activist for LGBTQ+ rights and social change in South Africa; she was well known for her football prowess, intelligence and humor.

In 2008, Simelane was brutally raped and murdered at only 31 years old. A victim of “corrective rape” in South Africa. Eudy’s incredible activism and story captivated the nation and brought the issue of 'corrective rape' to attention. I wanted to highlight her because she is one of my heroes and the whole world of football should know about and honor her.

Who is Carling Jackson?

Carling Jackson of Vancouver, Canada is an ex-footballer, humanitarian artist and professional, award-winning athlete portrait artist who immortalizes moments in sport on canvas. Carling is the most commissioned artist by athletes in the world. She has created over 200 paintings for athletes (across 18 leagues), leagues, sports brands, stadiums and teams from 22 countries. She is also the first sports artist in history to paint at a World Cup semi-final and final (For FIFA - Qatar 2022), the first sports artist to paint live on field at an MLS game and at a CONCACAF Gold Cup game. From Olympians to NBA players, her most recent pieces were for The Reggae Girlz (commissioned by Adidas at their WWC Team camp),  Zach LaVine (Chicago Bulls), and Richarlison (Brazil - World Cup). She was commissioned to paint a 20ft sports gallery, “Amplifying underrepresented athletes in sports” for the Wynn Hotel in Vegas in 2021.

This project was incredible to be a part of. If you google Women’s World Cup no artwork pops up (or very little). No fan artwork, no major brand has commissioned pieces. But then mens? Literally MILLIONS of images. As a former player and now artist in sport this infuriated me. When Shawna approached me to create something with FFH that changed the game and that told a bit of a story of the WWC in symbols; I was all over it. Paint the game - change the game. Working with Shawna - also an ex pro player is always amazing because she shares the same drive and passion to change the game and is doing just that with Football For Her. Often it takes players teaming up to change the game. I am grateful for FFH and this project!
